Before you send

  • Send from the athlete’s own email address, and keep it short enough to read on a phone.
  • Personalize the first line for each school (a recent result, a player you know, the major you want).
  • Put grad year, position, and a highlight link in every email. Coaches sort by those first.
  • Email the position coach or recruiting coordinator as well as the head coach when both are listed.
  • Follow up after 7–10 days without a reply. One polite follow-up is normal and expected.
  • Track who you emailed, when, and what they said, so every follow-up is on time.

1. Intro email

When to use it: First contact with a coach.

2. Follow-up (no reply)

When to use it: About 7–10 days after an email with no response.

Subject: Following up: [grad year] [position] [athlete name]

Coach [coach last name],

I wanted to follow up on my earlier email. I'm still very interested in [school] and wanted to make sure my information reached you.

Updated highlights: [highlight link]
GPA: [gpa]

If you're the right person to contact about recruiting for my position, I'd love to hear what you'd want to see from me next. If not, could you point me to the right coach?

3. After camp or showcase

When to use it: Within a few days of a camp, clinic, or showcase.

Subject: Thank you from [athlete name] ([grad year] [position])

Coach [coach last name],

Thank you for the time at the recent camp/showcase. I really enjoyed the experience and it made me even more interested in [school].

[Add one specific thing you learned or a drill/moment that stood out.]

I'd love to know what I should work on and whether there are next steps for me with your program.

4. After a game / highlight update

When to use it: When you have new film, stats, or a big game to share.

[Add 1–2 lines on recent stats, awards, or a key game.]

5. Thank-you after a reply

When to use it: As soon as a coach replies to you.

Subject: Thank you, Coach [coach last name]

Coach [coach last name],

Thank you for getting back to me. I really appreciate you taking the time.

[Answer any questions they asked, and confirm next steps: a call, a visit, a camp date, or more film.]

I'm excited about the possibility of playing at [school] and will keep you updated. My latest film is always here: [highlight link]
